At DrupalCon Europe, some 2000 people from all over the world come together to talk, discuss and learn about the technology with which we make our websites and web applications.
Drupal is now used for slightly larger websites with a lot of content, a lot of visitors, and there is a special focus on security and reliability. By the way, did you know that 1 in 40 websites in the world runs on Drupal?
Drupal 8 has been around for 5 years now and is still being worked on: this edition of DrupalCon the focus was mainly on content creation (news, pages, products, ...), shorter lead time when starting a new website and simpler management by the webmaster. We would like to discuss the trends that we noticed.
As the owner of a webshop, you know: visitors are already aware of what they need and have actually already made a decision before they arrive at your webshop. Short delivery times, price and simplicity of purchase are decisive elements. The built-in Drupal webshop has a solution for all these questions and is therefore the ideal software for an extensive but flexible webshop.
Most of the visitors to your webshop probably come via Google. They are looking for inspiration about a particular product and are not yet fully aware of what they want to buy. For those visitors it can be useful to work with blog posts, inspiration articles and use cases from existing customers. By using the right keywords you will end up high in the search results, which increases the chance that this potential customer will end up on your website. If the page is then optimized again and the visitor can easily lead to a product on the webshop, then a sale is almost guaranteed.
Speed is important - everyone has their own content
Research shows that if someone has to wait for more than 3 seconds on a site, he / she surfs to another site. No chance for a successful conversion from visitor to customer. But it is also important to offer every visitor a unique user experience: by default everyone gets to see the same content, but would it not be more interesting if a visitor sees content that is tailored to his unique situation or question, or that takes into account what he or she has already visited your site?
By using interesting Drupal tools such as JSON API and BigPipe, the site can be both fast and personal. Chinese? No problem, because we know exactly what to do
Easier management by the webmaster
With the releases of the last few months, a lot has changed for a webmaster: an extensive media library has been added, landing pages can be built more easily with the Layoutbuilder and a more modern management theme is coming soon, which will make Drupal look a lot fresher again.
The new layout builder makes it even easier to create landing pages. These pages can be used to direct visitors from the newsletter or a Google Adwords campaign to the correct information. This greatly increases the chance of a successful sale.
Strong technology ready for the future
Thanks to the new interesting functions that are constantly being added to Drupal, we continue to strongly believe in the future of this technology. For the larger websites with many visitors, many functionalities and here or there an integration with another system, Drupal is still the right choice for us. For smaller websites we build our websites in WordPress: less bells and whistles but certainly a worthy alternative.
